On Tuesday 11 March we welcomed the award winning Garden Designer, Annie Guilfoyle to speak at Privett Village Hall on ‘The Scented Garden’.   The meeting was very well attended and Annie treated us to an evening of her seasonal favourites.  Annie generously shared with us her vast knowledge of plants and where to site them in the garden.  The range of scented plants included shrubs, bulbs, perennials, scented foliage and, of course roses.

We held our annual Spring Show on Saturday 29th March at Privett Village Hall, which looked absolutely splendid in the bright sunshine.  The hall was full of colour and scent and the exhibits of daffodils, Spring bulbs, flowering shrubs and an exceptional display of hellebores, were all a sight to behold!  The flower arranging classes were beautiful and very well supported, and the cookery classes were also well supported with the Carrot cake class attracting the most comments.  The children’s entries were also excellent.  The independent judges were very complimentary about the high standard of the entries in all the categories.

It was very pleasing to see how many of our new members exhibited and appeared on the prizewinners’ sheet  and it was also so good to see so many visitors from our two villages come along in the afternoon to see all the lovely exhibits and enjoy tea and cake.

The Trophy winners are listed below:

Graham-Clarke Daffodil Plate Mary Hansford

Privett Flower Show Challenge Cup Marion Gimson

Elizabeth Cawson Trophy for Flower Arranging Marion Gimson

Dee Kiddle Cup for Cooking Patsy Langmead

Wendy Lees Memorial Trophy Lorna Smallbone

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 9th April at Froxfield Village Hall at 7.30pm.  Our speaker will be Barry Newman, and he will be talking about ‘Growing Vegetables in Raised Beds’.  Barry is a vegetable growing expert, who we know has excellent knowledge of his subject as he’s been to speak to our Club before.  He is always full of tips and advice for amateur gardeners.

On Tuesday 15th April we have an afternoon outing to Arundel Castle Gardens where we have a guided tour of the Castle’s world famous Tulip Festival.  Tickets cost £23.  Please contact Pippa Chapman on 07803 906312 or pjmchapman@yahoo.com for further details.  The cut off date to be added to the list is Monday 31 st March.  Mini coach travel is available at an extra cost and entry to the Castle is not included, although access to the restaurant is obviously available.
